The Stenciled Image & Tunnel Books

2 days: Saturday & Sunday

10 AM - 4 PM
8 participants maximum

Learn stencil techniques in Saturday’s session, then spend Sunday creating a tunnel book in this weekend workshop on image and bookmaking. We will be covering each topic on their own and discuss materials needed, ways to combine the two, and tips for editioning these prints or books.

Stenciled artwork generally breaks down an image into its most essential parts. Think of graffiti artists whose spray- painted graphics use stencils for making quick, repeatable images. We will cover the general mechanics of creating and using stencils to make multiple copies on paper. The instructor will focus on the use of acrylic ink, but demos will cover other mediums as well. The use of jigs to get good registration, considerations of stenciling typefaces, and the use of multiple colors will be addressed. This technique can be used alone or combined with printmaking, screenprinting, painting and other mediums to add additional detail in a piece. We will mostly be stenciling postcard-size flats which can be used for reference, correspondence, or collage.

Tunnel books are like small theaters, such as the shoebox dioramas children make in school. There are a variety of tunnel book structures. We will create one version, look at other variations, and work on building a model with content. Students can create their own simple illustrations, or use images from clip art or other visual material provided.
If you come with an idea or simple sketch for a small 3-dimensional world you want to create, you’ll be well prepared to make the most from this workshop. Our tunnel books will be 4” high x 6” wide, about the size of a postcard and have four panels, allowing for three foreground layers and the background. We will explore ways to incorporate the tunnel book into a folder or case. Each student will leave with working models, and one or more samples with content. These models could be saved for reference or be the beginning of final finished books made after the workshop.
