10 participants maximum
Cost: $300 + $85 materials fee

This course will provide an in-depth experience with mosaic design and fabrication. Each participant will create an 8” x 8” mosaic with traditional Mexican glass smalti and an assortment of other ceramic and glass tiles. Students will learn to cut the tiles into a variety of shapes and place them to create movement and pattern in their mosaics. Great for beginners or more advanced students!

Lisa will bring her background as a painter and designer to work with students to develop their compositions and personal imagery in mosaics. In this class we will work with Mexican smalti. These tiles are handmade and they have unusual variations of color and texture. Lisa Houck has worked with this medium for her public art installations because it is touchable, durable, and groutable, as well as being painterly and subtle in its colors and textures.

Participants should bring photos, books, magazines, and sketches as inspiration for mosaic designs. Designs should be sized at 8” x 8”
All supplies will be provided, and if students decide to make a second mosaic, they can pay the instructor for additional materials. Inexpensive frames ($20) will also be available for purchase from the instructor if participants would like to frame their work.
