Trying out reductive printmaking for the first time can feel intimidating. Instructor Coco Berkman will guide you through the magical process of reductive linoleum printmaking over this 4 week intensive course. Be ready to invest great hours of concentrated work to produce an edition of a colorful and meaningful-to-you artwork. We will be creating a reductive linoleum print using a minimum of four [Caligo Safe Wash Ink] colors. We’ll be making an edition of 7 prints on Arches 88 Paper.
The first class will be dedicated to discussing the basics of linoleum printmaking. We will transfer our image to the linoleum, make a template out of a sheet of matboard and register our sheets of paper.
The following sessions we will be carving and then printing our plates, laying down one color at a time over the next weeks...working from light to dark. Some previous relief printmaking experience is advisable but not necessary.
[Workshop participants will be encouraged to carve away their subsequent layers at home during the intervening time between classes.]
Materials Lists:
Students need to bring a detailed pencil on paper drawing [they love] to the first session. The size of the image should be no smaller than 12” X 12” and no larger than 18” X 24”.
Please bring your own carving tools if you have them. The Instructor will bring some carving tools that students can use.
