Pushing Paper: Exploring Drawing & Collage
Pushing Paper: Exploring Drawing & Collage
With Nancy Gruskin
2 days, Saturday and Sunday
April 18 - 19, 10 AM – 4 PM
Cost: $300 + $5 materials fee
12 participants maximum
Through a series of drawing and collage exercises, we will see how far we can push our work on paper. We will begin by making ink drawings based on direct observation of a variety of sources. These drawings will become the raw materials for new works, as we cut, reassemble, collage, and draw some more. By daring to alter and repurpose our drawings, we will discover that the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts! Participants will be provided with drawing paper, black india ink and brush, and colored construction paper for collage, but should also bring:
● One still life object (these objects will be our subject matter for the weekend;
there are times when you’;ll be working from your own objects; times you’ll be
working from other people’s objects; and times we will group them together
and observe the arrangement collectively)
● Glue for collage (glue stick, white glue, or gel medium)
● Scissors
● Two small plastic containers, one for holding water and one for holding ink
● Drawing tools of your choice (e.g., charcoal, colored pencils, multi-colored
Inktense blocks or hard pastels, crayons)
Optional materials to bring:
● Collage paper of your own (found papers, purchased papers, prints and paintings on paper that you’re happy to re-purpose)
● Water-based paints (fast-drying (so no open acrylics or water-based oil paints), if you’d prefer to “draw” with paint
All levels welcome.
