Pulp Painting with Handmade Paper
With Akemi Martin

3 days, Wednesday - Friday
August 6 - 8th, 9:30 AM - 3 PM
6 participants maximum
Cost: $400 + $55 materials fee

Papermaking master Akemi Martin will guide you through the process of creating unique sheets of handmade paper: first you’ll pull sheets using a deckle-box, then learn all the ways you can paint with pulp. Dyed pulp is applied onto a freshly pulled sheet of paper - combining papermaking and painting into one process. The pulp paint can be applied loosely with spoons & squeeze bottles, or can be applied more precisely with the aid of hand-cut stencils. You’ll also learn ways you can modify pulp paint to achieve a range of colors, effects, and densities.

The process is meant to be loose and experimental as you learn mark-making with pulp paint. You’ll have a batch of premade colors to work from that you can further mix into your own personal pallet. Once the paper is dried, it can be used for printmaking, collage, painting, or can be framed as is! Participants can expect to pick-up their dry paper 4 days following the workshop.

Participants will also have the opportunity to attend additional “Open Studio” Hours following the workshop to continue their projects & use up the remaining pulp from these sessions. There will be a $25/day Open Studio fee.

Akemi Martin is a papermaker and collaborator at Pace Paper in Brooklyn, New York where she works with artists—such as Donald Baechler, Shepard Fairey, and Leonardo Drew—along with fellow printmakers to produce a wide array of unique and multiple fine art editions using handmade paper.
