Collagraph: Plate Making and Printing With Catarina Coelho

Cost: $465 + $15 materials fee

In this workshop participants learn carborundum collagraph plate making techniques and explore the expressive qualities of additional materials and tools for collagraph plate construction. Participants practice fundamental printing techniques for collagraphs and print a variable suite.

First day: demonstration of collagraph plate construction - materials and principles. Participants work from selected images/drawings and collected textures. Demonstration of collagraph printing.

Second day: Additional demonstrations of printing techniques for collagraphs and fundamental registration methods. Participants explore color mixing strategies and print plates as intaglio, relief, and by practicing selective wiping.
Third day: Work session. Printing a variation of all matrices created in the workshop. Brief group discussion of selected prints.

In preparation for the workshop, participants are recommended to:

Bring one or more images/drawings that could be used as references for creating
plates. Plate sizes available: 12 x 9 in., 6 x 9 in., 8 x 9 in., and 8 x10 in. (mat-board and thin lexan).

Images/drawings can be traditional, digital, or photographs, all black and white or monochromatic. It is important that these visual references are varied in value and texture. Images should be of highe value contrast or show a range of four/five distinctive values or textures.
