Chinese Thread Book

Cost: $125 + $20 materials fee

In this workshop you will learn how to make a Chinese Thread Book that has 15 “secret” pockets. Participants will be provided with a kit for the first day. Kathy will demonstrate how to make several variations of secret pockets as well as how to put them together into a folio/book. The structures can be scaled up or down for use in other projects.

Participants can feel free to bring some colored decorative papers or “old art work” for embellishment purposes, as well as some ribbon to match (limited ribbon will be provided). Additional materials to bring are glue sticks, rulers, scissors (not too big), and bone folder (optional).

Kathy Lobo has been making books and boxes all her life. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Philadelphia College of Art (a.k.a. University of the Arts). Her degree was in Crafts with a double major in Metals and Fibers. She took her first formal book binding course at that time. She has also earned a Graduate Certificate in Traditional Chinese Painting from the Tianjin Fine Art College, Tianjin China. She learned about Chinese Thread Books from Ruth Smith, a world expert on the subject. They meet regularly to make books and boxes together. She is a member of the New York Center for Books arts and on the board of the New England Book Artists. She has taught many workshops for adults and children at various art centers and museums. Her own work is about creating order in chaos, threads into cloth, and papers into books and boxes. Her work has been displayed in galleries and is part of collections in museums such as the Museum of Women Artists in Washington D.C. and libraries such as the Queensland State Library in Brisbane, Australia.
